Christmas at the Castle

For interior designer Katharine, yuletide this year will be a low-key affair – just the 24 of them in her stunningly restored 16th-century Scottish castle. The castle comes alive at Christmas when the great hall is decorated with swags of greenery above the fireplace and tumbling from the iron chandeliers. ‘There are six bedrooms that usually sleep 12 but the extended family comes to stay for the festivities – us, my siblings and their children, my mother and father – and we all squeeze in together. There will be 24 of us this year! There’s no phone signal, internet or TV so we go back to old times – listening to music and playing board games. The Highland setting is stunning, and there’s fishing, shooting, and even skiing available nearby.
